Statement on Federal Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions

March 20, 2015

President Obama has signed an Executive Order that aims to cut the Federal Government’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 40 percent over the next decade from 2008 levels -- saving taxpayers up to $18 billion in avoided energy costs. Several major Federal contracting partners are also announcing their plans to disclose and reduce GHG emissions throughout the Federal supply chain. Members of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) released the following statement:

“As the single largest consumer of energy in the nation, reducing the Federal Government’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is absolutely critical in the fight against climate change. In coordination with Federal contracting partners, who today are announcing their own plans to cut GHG emissions, these actions will support U.S. efforts to reduce GHG emissions by 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. SEEC applauds the President’s leadership in taking steps today, which will help secure a cleaner and healthier tomorrow.”
