SEEC and Sen. Merkley lead joint letters calling for international climate aid in end-of-year funding package

Washington D.C. – On Friday, the leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), which includes Co-Chairs Reps. Gerry Connolly, Doris Matsui, and Paul Tonko and Vice Chairs Reps. Matt Cartwright, Alan Lowenthal, A. Donald McEachin, Chellie Pingree, and Mike Quigley, and an additional 31 House members, along with Sens. Jeff Merkley, Ed Markey, Cory Booker, Sheldon Whitehouse, Chris Murphy, Bernie Sanders, Richard Blumenthal, Elizabeth Warren, Ron Wyden, Tina Smith, Michael Bennet, Ben Cardin, Brian Schatz, Tom Carper, and Chris Van Hollen sent joint letters to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees urging that robust international climate funding is preserved in the final Fiscal Year 2023 funding package.

"With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, we have finally proven to the world our dedication to fighting climate change at home. Now it's time for us to demonstrate the same commitment internationally. After all, we cannot win the fight against climate change on our own. Rather, we need to bring the entire world together in a global collective effort," wrote the SEEC leaders and Sen. Merkley. "Given the importance of the global climate agenda to both the Biden administration and Congress – as demonstrated by strong interest in congressional delegations to the COP27 summit – we urge that international climate assistance is fully funded in the final FY23 appropriations legislation that is enacted into law."
