Washington D.C. – The leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), including Co-Chairs Reps. Gerry Connolly, Doris Matsui, and Paul Tonko and Vice-Chairs Reps. Matt Cartwright, Alan Lowenthal, A. Donald McEachin, Chellie Pingree, and Mike Quigley, released the following statement in response to Senator Manchin’s obstruction of climate investments in a reconciliation package.

“We are extremely disheartened by the news of Senator Manchin’s obstruction of a reconciliation bill that includes climate and clean energy investments. In the months since the House passed the Build Back Better Act, we had been encouraged by Senator Manchin’s repeated assurances that passing the climate portion of that bill was of paramount importance. We are dismayed that he has chosen to reverse course at the 11th hour after more than a year of painstaking negotiations.

“In that time, our resolve in the House to get these investments over the finish line has never wavered. We demonstrated this just a month ago by leading a letter signed by 175 House Democrats from across the ideological spectrum urging that a deal be reached to get the climate investments passed by the House in the Build Back Better Act signed into law. As we stated in that letter, passing these investments would address over the long-term both the inflation and energy crisis our nation currently faces.

“We also must not forget the 50 Republican Senators or their House Republican counterparts who have refused to even consider the climate and clean energy investments Democrats have rallied around. Their lack of engagement and blockage of good climate policies speaks volumes to where their true allegiances lie.

“Moving forward, SEEC will not let up in our efforts to ensure that the health of the climate is a major consideration in every relevant piece of legislation Congress takes up. We know that climate change is the crisis of our era and that it necessitates that we never lose our resolve, despite whatever obstacles we face.”
